My Family, My Business

Running a family is a lot like running a business. I know, I know… it’s so much more than that emotionally and such, but when you really break it down, it is!

Think about it, as head of the family, you have certain responsibilities just as you would if you were in charge of a company, or even a department. You are a LEADER in your family.

I have read my share of Leadership books AND Parenting books. The similarities are astonishing! {I have found The 1-Minute Manager to be a great combination of these skills for either scenario! See more on my post on Life-Changing Books} All people big and small have the same desires: to have a sense of belonging and significance. I mean, don’t we all want to feel as though we are important to those we are around?!?

So how does this break down? As a leader of your family, you have certain obligations {not responsibilities, per se, but rather OBLIGATIONS!} in order to ensure that your business family is moving in a positive direction.

  • Inspiration – Each person on your team/family needs moments of encouragement in order to excel at all they try. This can be done simply by using positive language and taking true, uninterrupted time to listen.
  • Direction – The choices you make on a day-to-day basis do not go unseen.  You are leading by example whether you like it or not.  Make positive choices and your minions will as well. Work hard and play hard and I bet your family will follow.
  • Management – You manage a budget {income and expenses}. This is often overseen. You have a set amount of money that comes in each month.  Do you know that number? If not, I encourage you to document this for three months {at least} along with your expenses and this will give you a solid representation as to how your money is spent.  From here, if adjustments are needed, you can prioritize.

Yes, this may not be the most emotional way to look at your family, but it is a realistic way to ensure that you are being not only an inspirational parent, but also a responsible parent.
